My Childhood Mishap: When I Broke My Left Elbow at the Age of 7

I want to share a personal story from my childhood that left a lasting impact on me. When I was just 7 years old, I broke my left elbow while at school. It happened while I was heading towards the teacher’s desk to hand in an assignment. To this day, I vividly remember the excruciating pain I experienced. Let me take you through the journey of my injury and recovery.

The Incident: On that fateful day, as I made my way towards the teacher, I suddenly lost my balance and fell. The impact was focused on my left elbow, causing an intense and immediate pain. Startled and in tears, I was rushed to the emergency room by my concerned father.

Medical Treatment: Skeletal Traction At the hospital, the doctors decided that skeletal traction was the best course of action for my injury. Skeletal traction involves the surgical insertion of pins (Steinmann) or metal wires (Wilson or Kirschner) into the bones. These pins, along with a synergistic system comprising a traction brace, weights, pulley suspension, and nylon wires, apply a pulling force to the affected area.

Despite the administration of local anesthesia, I can still recall the discomfort when the pin was inserted. The subsequent days were no better, as I had to cope with the discomfort and the limitations it imposed. My hospital stay lasted for 15 days, and unfortunately, it included the Christmas holiday that year, which meant celebrating the festive season in the hospital.

The Silver Lining: However, there was a silver lining to my hospitalization. The upside was the abundance of gifts I received during that Christmas. Friends, family, and well-wishers showered me with presents, helping to lift my spirits during this challenging time. It made the hospital stay a little more bearable, and I will always cherish those gifts as a reminder of the strength and resilience I discovered within myself.

Recovery and Rehabilitation: After my hospital discharge, the journey to recovery was not over yet. I had to undergo three months of physiotherapy to regain full functionality of my elbow. The process was sometimes uncomfortable and required determination and patience. Nevertheless, with the support of my family and the guidance of dedicated therapists, my elbow gradually healed, and I regained the use of my arm.

Breaking my left elbow at the tender age of 7 was an unforgettable experience. The pain, hospitalization, and subsequent rehabilitation period were undoubtedly challenging, but they also taught me valuable lessons about resilience and perseverance. Today, I look back on that time with gratitude for the care I received and the strength I developed. It serves as a reminder that even during difficult times, there is always hope for recovery and the opportunity to emerge stronger than before.
